The Utah Point Bulk Handling Facility (Utah
Point) is one of four berths located in Port Hedland that are owned by the
Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA). Utah Point comprises a berth 272m in length and
with a harbour depth of 14.5m, a ship loader with a peak load rate of
7,500 tonnes per hour, two stockyard product storage facilities and supporting
infrastructure, roads and product transport, and reclaiming and conveying
equipment. PPA owns and operates the berth and facilitates the export of bulk
products (currently iron ore and manganese).
The Pilbara Port Assets (Disposal) Bill 2015, introduced to Parliament in November 2015, provides the legislative framework for the Government to transition the Utah Facility to the private sector through a long-term lease. Consideration of the Bill has progressed to the Legislative Council, and has been referred to the Legislative Council Standing Committee on Legislation, with Parliamentary debate expected to resume in late August 2016. It is anticipated that expressions of interest will be sought from prospective bidders when there is further clarity on the timing for the Bill’s passage.
